Turning Heads

Log Cabin Ranch

green field In April of this year, Turing Heads, working with Ranch Director Toni Powell, Juvenile Probation Chief Bill Sifferman and the staff of Log Cabin Ranch, introduced a new program idea for pre-vocational training at the Ranch. The new program is designed to teach youth skills that will be transferable to the current job market, while broadening their idea of what jobs are available. Students get to choose from a list of 3 skills based, short term classes (8 weeks), to learn about a specific skill. It is our aim that every youth should get the opportunity to attend 2 classes during their stay at the Ranch. Offerings so far this year have included:

-Digital Sound Production in collaboration with BAVC/Youth Sounds
-Barber Shop
-Digital Story Telling
-Digital Radio Production
-Mural Painting in collaboration with Precita Eyes Mural Arts Center
-Web Site Design

young studentThe agencies that have collaborated with us play a big part in making this program successful, both through the expertise of their instructors and through the connections they can make for youth once they have returned to the city, providing further training and job connections. It is our plan to create these kinds of community connections for all of our programs.

In accordance with the mission of Turning Heads, all of our programs are enhanced by entrepreneurial skills training. We have recently reconnected with the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship, the place where Turning Heads was born. They are providing us with books and workbooks for the six week session, starting in November, which will be the starting point of our new collaboration, and the effort to design a program in business education that will best serve our youth.
